Dole to serve as Grand Marshal

The Honorable Robert J. Dole will serve as the Grand Marshal in the 2015 Grand Homecoming Parade Saturday, Oct. 24.

Dole graduated from Washburn with a bachelor of arts and juris doctor degrees, both in 1952. He held elected positions in the Kansas House of Representatives, as a Russell County attorney and a United States Congressman before he was elected to the United States Senate. In his 30 years with the U.S. Senate, he was chairman of the Republican National committee and the Senate majority leader, which he set a record as longest-serving Republican leader.

In 1976, Dole was President Gerald Ford’s vice presidential running mate and presidential candidate in 1988 and 1996. Washburn University has honored him with many awards including Honorary Doctor of Law in 1969, Honorary Doctor of Civil Law in 1985 and the Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1966. Washburn Law honored Dole with the Law Alumni Association Distinguished service Award in 1981 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Dole will ride in the first convertible of the homecoming parade with President Jerry Farley and his wife, Susan. The Homecoming Week celebration is Oct. 18 to 25. The weeklong celebration includes traditional events like Yell Like Hell, Top Hat decorating and the Homecoming Parade.

The Grand Tailgate, Bow Tie Bash and Grand Finale are special Homecoming events in celebration of Washburn’s 150th anniversary. For more homecoming information, click here

  1. This was very well written and you clearly did thorough research on Robert Dole. The only error I believe I saw was capitalizing "Decorating" because I believe it is apart of the event name in paragraph 4. Job well done!

  4. "In 1976, Dole was President Gerald Ford’s vice presidential running mate and presidential candidate in 1988 and 1996" I would reward this to flow better.

  6. The information you presented on Dole was very beneficial and helped give the reader a clear understanding of why it is such an honor to have him. I would add the word 'homecoming' into your headline just for clarification purposes. I don't really think it's necessary to generically list all the other homecoming events at the end of the story. If you insist on doing that then be sure to include their times, dates and locations. The primarily focus is the homecoming parade and Dole's presence so maybe include more about the parade in general.

  11. Good job! I would add more information on the other activities going on for Homecoming, but other than that, you presented clear and to-the-point information about Bob Dole, which is good considering there are probably a lot of students who aren't aware of all that he's accomplished. Well done!
