Production Shift Feedback

You need to comment twice on this blog post. Write up a few sentences explaining what you did on production nights and what your overall impressions of the experience were.

  1. I went through the newspapers sports pages and a few others for the Review. I was actually surprised with how much I knew, but still had Lauren double check me! Overall, I liked this experience because student media is awesome, with awesome people. I am glad I ended up challenging myself and strictly copy-editing the whole time I was there.

    1. Today was my second production shift. I worked from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It was easier today because I had two other students from our class there to ask questions. However, some of the media students were listening to music really loud. I usually don't mind all the chaos, but it was a little too much to concentrate this time. I do love the media team and atmosphere, they're all so friendly and able to help. I felt a little more confident in my editing this time around and I think working on other pages other then sports helped with that :). Overall, a great experience.

  2. When I got in Mallory handed me some stories that needed to be edited, I was pretty surprised with how much I actually did rewrite. I found myself second guessing the AP stylebook rules I thought I had memorized so the second session I ended up bringing my AP stylebook and the class book to reference back to. It was a good experience but time management was a big issue since I work two jobs and go to school.

  3. Today was my first production shift. Bradley handed me a copy of today's paper and I had to edit and circle mistakes I found. I went in the evening after supper and it was pretty quiet and retained a relaxed atmosphere.

  4. I went Tuesday for my production shift. I edited four or five pages of stories for the Review and then after edits had been entered, I went back over some of the stories. Everyone was really talkative since it was getting to be evening and they were really friendly with each other. I enjoyed working on the stories. I actually think one of the headlines I wrote was used for publication.

  5. Yesterday was my second production night shift. When I got there, Mallory handed me a story to edit and type up. It was pretty long. I found myself second guessing what was already written because I assumed it would be already correct. I had to correct and take out quite a lot of unnecessary information.

  6. On October 23rd, I attended my first publishing night. When I got there Mallory handed me several stories and briefs to be typed and edited. Some of the stories were short while others were long. I had to change some of the stories to past tense because they were announcing an event in the future.

  7. This Tuesday I went for my first production shift. Immediately when I walked in there the students were very friendly and welcoming. I actually knew a lot of the students working in there. I saw down at a table and was handed a story about a freshman on Washburn's volleyball team and how she got to where she is today. It was really interesting to read about because I found out more about the team dynamic of the volleyball team here. I brought my AP style book with me and I had to refer to it a few times when looking over pages. I was there editing with two other students and we would all look over the same pages so they had multiple checks over. I ended up fixing headlines and body copy, which I found to be easier than I thought. As I was looking around the room I noticed students writing stories, editing and one of the girls in there was writing checklists and crossing off things on the big whiteboard of tasks to be accomplished. It was a fun and busy atmosphere and I enjoyed my shift while I was there.

  8. My production shift was quiet for such a busy office. I was given several pages to edit. Most had been edited before and would be checked again, as I noticed while editing other pages. It was obvious why when I started checking for errors on my own. I found errors even though I could tell I was not the first or second to check the pages. It was enough for me to assume I that I might make my own errors in checking and editing. I was surprised at how much goes into the editing process. It seemed a very time consuming process and I am not sure how many other pages were still left to edit. My time on my shift was spent editing these pages and left me wondering how many more tasks there were and about the time it takes to get a weekly paper like the Review ready for press time.

  9. My second production shift happened to be on the day that the staff was preparing the newspaper to go to print and there was much more activity than last time. I was given stories to edit and retype, which was challenging because I felt like I was ripping apart somebody's baby. I wanted to be less tough, knowing I could also be wrong. However, it was fun and the time passed quickly.

  10. Tonight was my second production shift. Mallory handed me four different news releases from Washburn and I had to contort them into news briefs. I was a little confused because I didn't know whether to make them briefs for the paper (future tense: this will take place at this time on this date) or in past because the yearbook doesn't print for quite some time (this happened on this date and it was like this). But Kara helped me and afterwards gave me two stories to edit for AP style. The atmosphere was relaxed and everything went well.

  11. During my shift in October, I helped the Review on tech night. I was given print out pages of the Review and edited them. I came across errors that we've talked about in class and so I got out my AP stylebook and fixed the errors correctly. I enjoyed that night as it was fairly casual.
During my 2nd shift on Nov. 12, I was given 4 stories to edit at the Review. I get that to not slow down the review that stories that aren't being used will be given to editing students to look over, but I didn't like that the stories were from May. I enjoyed my first shift more because my efforts were helping a product that the campus would see. I did realize though that it takes a while to retype stories.

  12. For my shift I took some press releases Mallory gave me and turned them into briefs (basically an abstract of a press release). Overall, the experience was okay. People were fairly nice, because I knew some of them. The computer was extremely slow, however, and that was downright miserable.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, I shared my first editing shift at the Washburn Review with two additional students in our editing class from 2-4pm. Between the three of us, we traded and each individually proof read and edited all articles the staff gave us. We even shared an AP style book when we were stuck. It was nice to have two other class members there to ask questions to if need be. Overall, my experience was one I was very familiar with due to my experience during my freshman and sophomore year working for the Washburn Review. It was a very relaxed setting and easy going; I enjoyed it.

  14. Lauren's Washburn Review Editing Hours

    Oct. 21 from 5:30 to 6:30p.m.
    Oct. 22 from 2:30 to 4:00p.m.
    Nov. 12 from 3:00 to 4:30p.m.

At the first shift I edited news stories on the computer then came back the next day and edited articles that were printed. The third shift I worked on grammar for newspaper printed stories.
Editing taught me that it takes time depending on the grammar and there are several stories needed for each week.

  15. On my second shift, Tuesday, Nov 19, I shared my editing shift again with two additional students from our editing class from 2-4pm. Although, this time, while we traded and each individually proof read and edited the articles provided we also individually typed out and arranged briefs for the newspaper to choose from.

Overall, my experience throughout the second shift was different. I wasn't familiar with working on briefs nor was I familiar working on material not being used in the paper. However, as a student who needs the practice in editing, I know the practice helped me improve.

  16. Fatima Oubaid:
I did copy editing for every production night, at least five hours each time.

I read the articles to make sure they were in AP Style and sounded grammatically correct. I also helped insert changes in the server.

  17. I helped print out stuff for my classmates to edit. I printed out stories, press releases and briefs for them. I asked them to edit each item and type them in word and save them to the class server. I created a folder in our class server called the EDITING SHIFT FOLDER and asked all my classmates to save everything they have edited there.

I also got experience with copy editing stories, press releases and briefs that I put online during the semester and copy edited for the newspaper. I think I learned a lot of AP style throughout this class that has helped me become a better copy editor.

  18. For my second shift I worked on creating some more briefs and helped copy edit a story on study habits for finals. Kara was there and was friendly. Overall, the experience was pleasant.

  19. I went in for my first production shift at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4. I was surprised to see how quiet the office was. Aside from a short discussion among staff members, I spent my two hour shift in silence, which was great for the first 30 - 45 minutes, but I found myself sorely missing my broken iPod before long. My workload was simple. I was handed hard copies of a few stories, asked to copy edit, type them out with corrections and submit. I believe I was able to get three done during that shift.

I found myself tempted to completely rewrite chunks of stories while editing them, which I usually do when proofreading or peer-reviewing any piece of work. Being in production mode, I stuck with making any AP or grammatical corrections I thought needed to be made.

    1. My second production shift came on Monday, Nov. 18. Working the 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. shift, there was quite a bit more activity in the office this time, including a staff meeting for the last half of my shift. My workload was identical to that of the first shift - copy edit, type, submit. I was able to complete and submit two or three stories this time as well.

I think I was a little more focused on the task at hand this time. I noticed that I was able to grab the paper and start copy editing right away instead of reading through the stories two or three times. This shift felt much more like actual production and went by much quicker.

  20. My second production shift was completed today. I was given some stories to edit and type up. I did these during class actually since nobody is going to be in the Student Media room this evening.

  21. I did my production shifts on 11/11 from 1-3 and 11/25 from 2-4. The first day at the review I did some copy editing for a few stories. There wasnt a lot of people in there at the time so it was easy to get things done because i wasnt distracted by anything. The second time I had my production shift I had to copy edit some stories again but on top of that i had to write a news brief for a story that had already been written which was something that i have never done before. I talked to someone that worked there and they kind of helped me out a little bit. Overall the experience was okay and I was glad that people were there to answer questions that i may have had.

  22. On October 23rd, I attended my first publishing night. I was very nervous but excited too! Mallory was there, and she handed me a few stories and briefs. She told me that they need to be looked over and to edited. After I was done doing that, I was to type them up. They were all about events that were in the future tense and I had to change them into past tense. I also had to make some longer, while the others needed to be shortened.

  23. November 6th was my second production shift. Once again Mallory handed me a story to be edited and typed up. This time it was it was easier for me since I had done it before. Once i was done, I researched our media site and read up on some articles. When I had that for a while, I then read an old print of the school paper. I had never done that before and found it to be pretty interesting. I really enjoyed the entertainment section where I did the word search and sudoku. Also on the day I worked, a lady from the community came in with historical Topeka items and stories. It was fun to hear her stories about Topeka and the historical happenings that have occurred here. The staff was also very professional while talking to her and figuring out exactly what it was she wanted them to do with her little pieces of history. Overall, working in the media room was pretty fun and I enjoyed meeting the people who worked in there!
