Over the
summer, Mabee Library changed its hours of operation. Mabee used to be open 24
hours Monday through Friday and is now only open until 2 a.m. Monday through
Wednesday, until 11 p.m. on Thursday and until 6 p.m. on Friday. Financial
constraints and students' failure to utilize these extended hours are said to
be the reason for the change.
While the
cut in hours may benefit the library financially, students are worried that it
will affect their study habits. There are still a number of students who relied
on Mabee’s 24/5 schedule to complete their studying. The extended hours were
also an attractive selling point to prospective Washburn students. Some may
argue that the hours are still plenty extensive for the average student,
however, for those students that work either really early or really late, the
loss of those several hours may be crucial to them. Perhaps if this proves to
be a problem to too many students, Mabee will decide to reinstate their
previous schedule.
I think this is a really relevant topic. Did anyone else notice they failed to update the library schedule in the planner?
ReplyDeleteThe only correction that I see is this "There are still a number of students who relied on Mabee’s 24/5 schedule to complete their studying" I think you need to change this around, there were a number of students who relied on Mabee's 24/5 schedule to complete their studying. They can't rely on it anymore because it's not offered, so the still makes it sound like it is still an option.
I don't use the library, so I don't have too much of an opinion other than that of it kind of makes sense to me that they would cut hours. Theres no real reason to have it open for 24 hours. There are plenty of places that are quiet on campus that could work just as well as a library.
ReplyDeleteThis issue is something that is very relevant to Washburn students at the moment because Mabee's change is relatively new. The format needs to be altered significantly to include more than just one lead paragraph and then a larger secondary paragraph. You need to work on dividing your thoughts and putting them in the order from most to least importance. A reader wants to the know the most crucial details as soon as possible when they start reading; if they aren't satisfied with the details then they'll stop reading. The headline is fairly good, although "Library" doesn't need to be capitalized. Maybe try a more enticing synonym for "cut." Overall you have strong details, you just need to improve the organization and format.
ReplyDeleteIf you say students are worried, cite examples to prove that statement. Otherwise, stay neutral in your observations. I like the angle of your story. I would like to see it as a full article, it's a topic students care about.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the article! I like the topic you chose and the angle you chose to take with it. I wasn't sure on the formatting and why after Monday through Wednesday, until 11 p.m. as to why there was a comma there and not after Monday through Friday. I would change that so they are both consistent with one another. Another thing I saw was in the sentence, "Some may argue that the hours are still plenty extensive for the average student, however, for," I would put a ; after student so it would ready student; however, for. So, it wouldn't be run-on sentence. I think you did a great job and again, loved your choice of topic!
ReplyDeleteAs a non-traditional student I can see where this will effect students drastically. I know there have been several times I have had to come to campus late/early in the night/morning to do printing or research. For students with time constraints such as a full-time job I can see the concern!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I noticed was the way the current hours of operation were worded. I would maybe try to make it more of a bulleted list with days/times rather than listing them the way they are. I had to read it several times in order to understand the hours of operation.
I use the library all the time and I was unaware of these time changes. I think that the changed library hours may end up hurting Washburn and the students. I go to the library late at night because my busy work, school, and sorority schedule make it hard to go during normal hours. The 24-5 hours not only gave students a place to study but an opportunity to be employed during those hours.
ReplyDeleteI am a person who is at the library at very late hours because of my work schedule and it really does upset me that there is not the 24-5 anymore. I am a night owl and they are not contouring to my needs.
ReplyDelete"is now only open until 2 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, until 11 p.m. on Thursday and until 6 p.m. on Friday". I would reward this.. reading through this the first time confused me.
ReplyDeleteVery relevant article to students. The last sentence in the first paragraph is passive voice. Great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat topic! The only thing I would say is to maybe list the new times in bullet point to make easier to read and understand. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThe sentence about the new library hours could be rewritten, but I think this is a really relevant post. I don't use the library as much as other students probably do, so the new hours don't affect me, but I can understand students' concerns about the cut hours. Good article!
ReplyDeletevery good story topic, I think it's good idea to cut hours at library because there are no more than 10 students in the library after 3 a.m. according to my personally experience.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Just one thing, what about the opening hours?
