Student Media Experience -- please comment on this post

Please write a paragraph about your experience as a comment after you have completed both of your production shifts. You also need to return the signed sheet to me during class time.

  1. Well, it looks like I am the first one to finish both of my shifts working with Student Media. I basically did the same tasks for both shifts. Ryan gave me multiple stories to edit. I was surprised to see that most of the stories I read were very poorly written. It took a considerable amount of time to properly edit them. After I was finished editing, if I still had time left, Ryan would pull up the story on InDesign so I could make the editing changes and save it. Both shifts ended up going by fairly quickly since the editing was so time consuming. However, there were a couple brief moments where I had considered stabbing my eyes out with my pencil rather than continue editing (I am confident that Regina has felt this a few times as well). Good luck to my fellow classmates in their future shifts. I know our experience and knowledge will definitely benefit Student Media.

  2. I just finished my second shift in Student Media. I worked on much of the same things Jenn worked on. Ryan seems like a very busy guy with a lot on his plate. Knowing this, I felt compelled to help as much as I could. This included editing several stories and occasionally adding them to pages in inDesign. My first shift was spent placing stories and pictures to fit a page, which I enjoy. Editing papers, on the other hand, was worse than pulling teeth. There were several instances where I wanted to scream and rewrite the entire paper. The shifts went pretty quickly because editing and looking up different things in the AP stylebook took a considerable amount of time. I am happy to report that a lot of things we have learned in class over AP style came in handy. I'm glad I was able to help in Student Media and look forward to seeing my edited stories in the Washburn Review next week!

  3. Even though I have experience working for Student Media I have always done reporter work and never had to edit before so this was a different experience. For my first shift I rewrote some press releases for publication and I edited the crime graphic to update it with recent information for that specific weeks paper. For my second shift I edited stories written by students. One of the stories was a disaster that had me pulling out the AP style book and a few hairs and the other was well written and required only a few edits. It was good experience and since neither of my shifts were during production day it was relaxed and I was able to learn a lot.

  4. My first shift had much more variation than the second one. During my first shift, I edited some articles, created an article from a press release and redid the layout from one page. It seemed like they struggled to find enough work for me to do. I was glad when the shift was over at the end because they had such a hard time keeping me busy. The second shift consisted only of editing some articles and making the changes on the computer. This time it was easy to keep busy and the time flew by.Some articles were indeed poorly written.

  5. I finished my second shift at student media on Tuesday, November 28. I did both my shifts on Tuesday nights so I was able to see what they go through trying to get the paper ready and sent to press on time. Since I had never experienced this before it was definitely a new experience. During both shifts I helped copy edit stories. On the first shift I also helped with bod on the street, which was fun, and during the second shift in addition to copy editing, I typed stories and did the edits on InDesign. The knowledge I've learned in this editing class was very helpful in this experience. The stories definitely needed help in the editing department, and I felt like I was able to help.

  6. I recently finished both of my shifts at student media. I did both of my shifts during the day on Tuesday. During the times that I was in there, it was pretty slow. During both of my shifts I was asked to copy edit stories. I really enjoyed doing this, it gave me valuable experience in editing. The stories that I was asked to edit required a lot of work. I was pleased with myself for being able to notice and easily fix the errors that I found. It proved that I am learning a lot of new and valuable information in our editing class. Overall, I think that this was a great experience and I am glad that I was able to be a part of it.

  7. I finished my second shift at the review this weekend. As long as my experience is concerned, both times I primarily worked with Fatima and Ryan. During my first shift I was able to help lay out an entertainment page. My second shift was mainly focused on copy editing. Although it wasn't a bad experience I am glad that we don't have to do any more. The main reason is I don't feel like they were worth the time invested. I am an extremely busy student and I felt that I waited on things to be done more than anything during my shifts. It could have been because I did all of the late shifts on Tuesdays, or because I thoroughly despise copy editing, but things were very slow paced when I was there.

  8. I edited a lot of work on my first shift. It seemed like some of the articles were recent and some were a few years old- from 2012 old so I'm not sure if it was busy work or if they really needed it to be edited. Ryan seemed grateful to have them done though, so I was glad I could help. On my second shift I wrote an article about Moore Bowl showing the Royals playoff game to the public. I only had the information on the Facebook page to go off of as I hadn't heard of that event going on so I did the best I could. It ended up being posted online. I was there for both shifts on a Tuesday at noon, so it was very slow and not many people were in the office.

  9. I did the same thing for both of my shifts. My first shift, I was introduced to Blox and to the website. I learned how to take material from the paper on InDesign and put it in Blox to upload it to the website. I found that I am pretty quick at uploading and updating articles. On my first shift, I uploaded most of issue 8 of the Review. On my second shift, I did the same thing, only this time I worked on issue 9. I think I improved my Mac skills by working with these programs and I now know how to put articles and images online.

  10. I did two completely different works for my shifts. In my first shift, I worked with Regina, she taught me how to put InDesign’s articles and pictures into Blox, and upload them to the Washburn review website. That was my first time to do this work. Although it was a simple work, I think it is very easy to get mistakes if one is not careful. My second shift, for me, was quite a challenging work. I got a question from Regina, and I work was to ask 4 students or faculties to answer the question and take photos for them on the campus. The question is “What do you think of Brittany Maynard’s decision to end her own life because of her terminal brain cancer?” I asked almost 20 people to answer the question, but most people said they are uncomfortable with this question. And some people had answer the question, but they didn’t want to their photo post on the Washburn review. It is very hard for me, especially I was a little bit shy to ask strangers question. But I did it! :) It was a really nice experience.

  11. In my first shift, I uploaded several stories and images from the print edition of The Review to the website. I did this a lot when I worked for Student Media last year, so it wasn't difficult to accomplish the task. The second shift wasn't exactly a shift. I just went to four students and asked them, "Do you think Kansas should allow same-sex marriage?" Every student I asked had no problem sharing their thoughts with me, so that made it a lot more enjoyable!

  12. I completed my two shifts in Student Media on 11/4 and 11/11. During my first shift, they were running a little low on things for me to do. I copy edited two stories, which wasn't difficult because I did a lot of that when I worked for the organization last year. I did learn, however, that some of the reporters have a hard time being objective in their coverage of news stories. During my second shift, I copy edited two stories and also wrote several briefs using University provided press releases. I enjoyed doing this because it was a good opportunity to practice both writing concisely and picking out the most important pieces of information.

  13. I only ended up doing one shift because I forgot when I had to be there. I spent my time working with Blox and getting pictures from Yell Like Hell together. I spent the whole time uploading and labeling photos. Unfortunately I had no idea what happens during Yell Like Hell so most of my captions were generic. While I was there we figured out a faster way to upload photos which was my only real contribution to the process.

  14. During my time spent in Student Media I worked on a few different things. In my first session I put captions and authors on all the the pictures they have on their online website. I learned about the software they use for their newspaper and how complicating it can all be. I had about 5 or so tabs open at one time. I also learned that when you are doing this much at once, the computer likes to go really really slow, making it even harder to accomplish anything. In my second session, I called lots of professors and other faculty on campus to get quotes for their magazine coming out in December. By doing this I learned that it is really hard to get ahold of people; I called about 50 people who didn't answer their phones or didn't have an office on campus. I also learned that because of this, getting quotes and interviews can be very difficult and you must always give yourself enough time to complete the task because if you procrastinate on something like this it could ruin your whole page and/or story.
Even though it all seems like it would of been stressful it wasn't too bad and time went by really fast, which is a good and bad thing. After doing this I don't think I could ever work for Student Media though because it is a lot of time and work and I'm way too lazy for that especially since I'm taking six classes and always have stuff to do. I would never do it again but it was a good experience I must say.

  15. The two shifts I worked were on November 4th and November 18th. while there I spent time editing stories, one of the stories i edited was about how to succeed in college, more specifically how to take good notes. Another story was about the Day of the Dead. In addition to editing stories I also helped put a story on the page in InDesign. This was beneficial for me because I am not that good with the program so it was interesting to see the process that goes into publishing a paper. It's hard to realize just how much work goes into it and the coordination and teamwork it takes to get a finished product. I saw just how reliant everyone is on each other to get things done and overall it was a good experience for me.
