Forgetting to be Thankful

Thanksgiving is an often overlooked holiday. It’s the time of year where you gather with friends and family to remind yourself what you’re thankful for, while stuffing your face with excessive amounts of turkey and mashed potatoes. Step into any store and you will see how Thanksgiving seemingly doesn’t exist because of one thing: Christmas. Target and Walmart already look like winter wonder lands. Bath and Body Works has had their Christmas items on shelves for a good month now. And I know what you’re thinking, putting Winter Candy Apple and Vanilla Bean Noel scents out in October? Yes, Bath and Body Works waste no time. Why are we saying ‘ho-ho-ho’ this time of year when we really should be saying ‘gobble gobble’? Christmas is American’s favorite holiday, but skipping one holiday, a major on at that, is unnecessary.

Black Friday had gotten out of hand as well. Sales in some stores start the morning of Thanksgiving instead of the wee hours of the morning the next day. Employees aren’t able to spend time with their loved ones because they are scheduled to work so other people can save a few extra bucks on a TV or an iPad. Starting this year companies got the memo that Thanksgiving is a holiday that should be spent with family and not at a department store. Most retail chains are making their sales start at 6 a.m. the next morning which is what Black Friday should have been like all along.

Leave Christmas to December and let November have Thanksgiving.

  1. I agree that Black Friday is such a crazy new "holiday" that we've created. I never have participated in getting up super early and heading to a store to wait in line for hours. I can stand crowded places, so Black Friday is not my cup of tea. I usually participate in Cyber Monday deals instead because I like online shopping much more.

  2. Companies are starting to do Christmas in July, pretty soon it's going to be Christmas all year long.
